EaDo cafe Tout Suite plans to move its flagship location to an East End mixed-use project next summer, the latest business to relocate in advance of the Interstate 45 expansion.

Until it finishes its new site on the ground floor of the Mill apartment complex at Runnels and Navigation, Tout Suite plans to continue operating its Commerce Street location, said CEO Anne Le. All of the location's 50 employees also are expected to relocate.

The move is bittersweet, said Le, who opened the cafe at the redeveloped warehouse in 2014, before the neighborhood east of downtown had become as popular as it is now. But the coffee shop became a hangout for students, remote workers and downtown denizens.

Le hopes to salvage elements of the 100-year-old building for the new coffee shop, which will have a similar minimalist modern industrialist design, she said. The goal is “to have that grit and history of where we are now into the new location,” Le said.

The goal is to have the same work-friendly atmosphere, including a zone for remote workers who want separation from diners, she said. A dog-friendly patio will provide more seating than the current location, she said.

Tout Suite's move comes about a decade after Le scouted an old brick building on Navigation for a potential café that she didn't lease. That 1950s-era building will be remodeled as part of the The Mill development.

“It’s like coming full circle,” said Le, who also owns a second Tout Suite location downtown and Sweet, a cupcake shop in CityCentre.

Meanwhile, construction of the Mill’s 341-unit apartment complex is almost complete, with residents expected to move in beginning in December, said Lisa Reyerse, marketing director at Triten Real Estate. Tout Suite’s presence will add to the appeal of the apartments, she said.

“Tout Suite is such a staple for remote working … so it’s like an amenity times 50,” Reyerse said.
